RENT (Movie Review)

Title : RENT
Director : Chris Colombus
Release Date : 2005, November 23rd
Genre : Drama, Musical, Romance
Cast : Anthony Rapp, Adam Pascal, Rosario Dawson, Idina Menzel
Summary : This rock opera tells the story of one year in the life of a group of bohemians struggling in modern day East Village New York. The story centers around Mark and Roger, two roommates. While a former tragedy has made Roger numb to life, Mark tries to capture it through his attempts to make a film. In the year that follows, the group deals with love, loss, AIDS, and modern day life in one truly powerful story.
Based on Puccini's 'La Boheme', 'Rent' tells the story of one year in the life of friends living the Bohemian life in modern day East Village, New York City, 1989-1990. Among the group are our narrator, nerdy love-struck filmmaker Mark Cohen; the object of Mark's affection, his former girlfriend, Maureen Johnson; Maureen's Harvard-educated public interest lawyer and lesbian lover Joanne Jefferson; Mark's roommate, HIV-positive musician and former junkie, Roger Davis; Roger's new girlfriend, the HIV-positive drug addicted S&M dancer, Mimi Marquez; their former roommate, HIV-positive computer genius Tom Collins; Collins' HIV-positive drag queen street musician/lover Angel; and Benjamin Coffin III, a former member of the group who married for money and has since become their landlord and the opposite of everything they stand for. Shows how much changes or doesn't change in the 525,600 minutes that make up a year.

About few weeks ago i watched this movie. If i not mistaken, this movie is made from broadway play. My first impressions about the intro of the movie is : 'WOW, this is gonna be a great night watching this movie'. I really love the songs they (main casts) sang, Season of Love. But then i was just like : 'sigh, this film is overrated, they sing everything -___-'. Then i realized, that this is a musical movie so no wonder they stuffed so many songs in the movie. I got excited by the scene when Angel appear as a Santa in Mark and Roger's apartment. I got more excited in the scene where all of Mark's friends and himself in a restaurant after Maureen had her protest. They all singing a song about freedom and living as a bohemian. This song really open my mind. I know there are some people who live their life as a homosexual, bisexual, trisexual, and so on, but I never think how could I live with them. After watching this movie, it is OK if i have a friend who have a different sex orientation, different point of view or another differences. We have to appreciate it.

Songs in this movie are really good. Search for Jonathan Larson to seek the songs. And, oh, so many beautiful moments in this movie. I nearly cried when finally one of the eight friends died :'(

To all who like freedom and liberty and songs too, maybe they'll like this movie. I love this movie, like, really into it! Go watch this movie!

Favorite song(s) : Seasons of Love, No Day But Today
